Furnace Short Cycling: Why It Turns On and Off Every Few Minutes

Furnace short cycling? The six causes of a furnace that starts and stops constantly, why it damages your system, and how a technician properly diagnoses it.

Short cycling is when a furnace fires, runs two to five minutes, shuts down, then repeats. It burns more fuel, wears out ignition components, never evens out the temperature in the house, and in a gas furnace it can signal a real safety problem.

Six causes, in the order we usually find them

  • Restricted airflow. A dirty filter, closed registers, a blocked return or undersized ducts overheat the heat exchanger and trip the high-limit switch.
  • Dirty flame sensor or weak ignitor. Flame is proved, then lost; the board retries and eventually locks out.
  • Blocked flue or failing pressure switch. Combustion air is not proving, so the sequence aborts.
  • Thermostat problems. Wrong cycle-rate setting, loose wiring, or a thermostat mounted in direct sun or above a supply register.
  • Oversized furnace. A unit far too large satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before the house is actually comfortable.
  • Cracked heat exchanger. Blower air disturbs the flame and causes rollout. This is a carbon monoxide hazard requiring immediate shutdown.

What it costs you

Ignition draws the most fuel of any point in the cycle. Doubling or tripling cycles per hour raises gas usage, shortens ignitor and inducer life, and puts thermal stress on the heat exchanger — the single most expensive part in the furnace.

The professional fix

A technician measures static pressure and temperature rise across the heat exchanger and compares both to the data plate. If the rise is above spec, the fault is airflow. If it is in spec and the unit still cycles, the investigation moves to flame proving, venting and controls. Guessing at parts is what turns a $200 repair into a $900 one.
